A renewed push by gambling enthusiasts to legalize sports betting in Texas includes help from a former lawmaker who holds some powerful cards: ex-Gov. Rick Perry. Perry was tapped by the Sports Betting Alliance, a group that includes all major Texas sports franchises, to convince hesitant legislators that the money the state can collect from legalizing sports gambling outweighs any concerns they've raised. Perry, the governor from 2000 to 2015, released a video through the alliance saying that he supports legalized sports betting and that lifting the state's ban would give Texas an additional $250 million a year in tax revenue, according to a study by a California gambling consultant.
